Four of the Most Common Cosmetic Procedures and Their Down Time

If you’re planning on undergoing cosmetic surgery in the coming months, you’ve probably already begun thinking about how much time you’ll need to take off from work or school as you recover. After all, just like other major surgeries, most cosmetic procedures will leave your body significantly stressed and in need of rest in order to properly recover. Here are four of the most common cosmetic procedures and the amount of time you’ll likely need to take for recovery:

  • Breast implants. Following a breast augmentation procedure, you will likely feel discomfort around both your nipple area and the muscle tissue beneath your breasts. Most women who undergo Philadelphia breast augmentation can get back to their standard routine after two to three days of rest, but you are advised to avoid heavy lifting and excess strain to your pectoral muscles for up to six weeks.

  • Rhinoplasty. Due to the excessive swelling and bruising that is common after a rhinoplasty procedure, most patients like to take at least a week’s recovery time to allow their head to have all-day elevation. While most people see a reduction in swelling after ten to fourteen days post-operation, it may take up to a few months to see a full recovery.

  • Liposuction. Most people who have liposuction in Philadelphia do not find the procedure to be particularly stressful and are able to return to their daily activities in as little as two days to a week.

  • Tummy tuck. A full abdominoplasty (or “tummy tuck”) removes a large amount of skin from the stomach area and can be particularly stressful. Most people are given painkillers post-op, which can make certain jobs that require operating machinery or driving impossible to complete. You may be able to return to work in about two weeks’ time, but you will likely have to wear compression garments over your abdomen for up to six weeks while the swelling goes down.

Though these estimates are useful for most people to get an idea of how much time they’ll need to take off following a cosmetic procedure, it’s important to plan ahead and make your schedule flexible in case you react particularly negatively to the procedure. Talking to your doctor ahead of time is a great way to ease any concerns about your recovery and to assist in planning for your down-time post-operation.
