Rhinoplasty FAQs

Q. Am I a candidate?

A: Patients are a candidate for a rhinoplasty if their facial growth is complete, and they are physically healthy. At the consultation, we will review your medical history and perform a nasal examination. X-rays or a CT scan may be required, depending on the individual. If a patient has a prior history of a nasal fracture or sinusitis, an additional evaluation will be needed. Individuals with a significant underlying medical disease will require medical clearance for surgery.

Q. How long is the recovery time for a rhinoplasty procedure?

A: For the initial swelling and bruising to diminish, it takes about seven to ten days. A small cast is placed over the nose, and it is removed after one week. Demanding activity should be avoided for two to four weeks after surgery. Initial swelling lasts for about a few weeks, but the nose can remain swollen and sensitive for the next few months. Total recovery time from a rhinoplasty can last up to twelve or eighteen months. Since everyone’s body reacts differently to the procedure, recovery time varies, but all patients should remain cautious of their facial area months following the surgery.

Q. Is there pain, bruising, scarring?

A: The answer is yes, but each is limited and well monitored by Dr. Gabay. The bruising and pain gradually improves over the first week to two weeks after surgery, and the scarring is very minimal and unable to be seen.

Does a rhinoplasty involve “breaking” the nose?

A: Dr. Gabay does not “break” the nose of patients undergoing rhinoplasty. Dr. Gabay performs osteotomies, in which he performs precise incisions along the nasal bones, which then allow him to shift the positioning of the bones.

What kind of anesthesia is used for the surgery?

A: Dr. Gabay performs rhinoplasty surgery under general anesthesia. General anesthesia is the safest type of anesthesia because the airway of the patient is never at risk, creating a smooth, safe procedure.
